Education

In 2015 I earned my California State Teaching Credential through the University of La Verne. This credential authorizes me to teach mathematics in all California Public School classrooms from Grades K through 12. In 2015, I also earned my English Learner (EL) Authorization and Cross-cultural, Language, and Academic Development (CLAD) Certificates from the State of California Teaching Commission. These credentials authorize me to instruct English learners in listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. For more information visit: http://www.ctc.ca.gov/credentials/leaflets/cl628c.pdf In 2014 I completed training from the American Modeling Teachers Association on teaching students in Chemistry using the Modeling Instruction approach. This method of teaching science focuses on clear and precise communication, collaboration, and critical thinking. In 2011 I earned my Masters of Science (MSc) in Interdisciplinary Ecology from the University of Florida's School of Natural Resources and the Environment (SNRE). SNRE facilitates collaboration across scientific disciplines in order to deepen understanding and solve environmental problems. I conducted my graduate research in Malawi (the small southeast Africa country where I did the Peace Corps). You can read my thesis at the University of Florida Library Website: http://etd.fcla.edu/UF/UFE0043443/fort_j.pdf In 2003 I earned a Bachelors of Arts (BA) in Biology from Swarthmore College. Swarthmore is consistently ranked as one of the leading liberal arts institutions in the US. In addition to biology and chemistry, I also took coursework in mathematics including linear algebra, symbolic logic, and probability and statistics. In 2001 I graduated from the prestigious 2 year program at Deep Springs College. Deep Springs is a small school located on a cattle ranch in the desert of Eastern California. You can learn more about it here: http://www.deepsprings.edu/about Upon my completion of Deep Springs I was accepted as a transfer student to Swarthmore College. In 1999 I earned an International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma from George School in Newtown, Pennsylvania. In addition to successful completion of the challenging IB curriculum I also received top scores (5) in AP Calculus BC, AP Biology, AP Spanish Language, and AP US History.

Experience

I have been helping math and science students improve performance and achieve their dreams since 2001. I provide student-centered coaching that builds knowledge, skills, and mindset for success. I hold an International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma, a bachelor’s degree in biology from Swarthmore College (top-ranked liberal arts college), and a master’s of science from University of Florida (world-class Research-I Institution). I am a trained member of the American Modeling Teachers Association with special emphasis in chemistry instruction, and I have passed the California Department of Education exams in General Science, Chemistry, and Higher Mathematics. My own test scores: GRE (Grad School SAT) Math: 800 AP Calculus: 5/5 AP Biology: 5/5 IB Biology: 6/7 AP US History: 5/5 AP Spanish Lang: 5/5 I enjoy helping high school and college students connect the dots between what they already know and what they need to learn. I have helped students improve their scores for the SAT, ACT, Algebra, Precalculus, Calculus and Chemistry. The secret to my success is connecting authentically with students and helping them to activate their intrinsic desire for successful learning. My rates ($60/hr) are higher than some other tutors on this site. Hobbies

In my free time I enjoy going on adventures of many different kinds. The mountains to the north of Claremont offer an exciting range of places to explore. I also enjoy reading, cooking, and playing music. I still have a lot to learn when it comes to playing the piano, but I am excited to keep adding on little bits and pieces to my repertoire.
